Let's all do something positive, different and brilliant during these dark days. Trust us; this is an event you are going to love!!
At present, at the SCOOP, we are compiling THE collection of Ireland's most ideal, it's quirkiest, THE most surreal Christmas gifts around; plus the gifts that money can't buy - the gift that people will receive this Christmas and make it a Christmas to remember.
On the 2nd of December, the SCOOP, Pygmalion, Choice Cuts, The Lost Society, auctioneer extra-ordinaire George Gerard Mealy and, our host for the evening, Michael Hayes are taking over the beautiful Powerscourt Townhouse in the heart of Dublin City, and will host a huge event and exciting auction where people can buy their loved ones new, and brilliant gifts that are all simply Better Than Socks!!
Think of receiving a romantic flight in a hot air balloon or the chance to jump out of plane and have it filmed? Or getting the chance to appear in Fair City? Getting to spend a day in a Ferrari or simply being given the chance to para-glide for the first time...
You can play a huge role in this:
- Are you the one who can easily get the most amazing present in ireland, and then watch it go under ther hammer at an exciting auction in order to raise funds to build a school in India?
- Do you know someone who has a company they would like to promote, or a service or product they would like to donate to the cause? And in turn, benefit from great exposure? (See our marketing plan below)
- Can you help us find Ireland's quirkiest gift? If you like you can even present it (in a mystery box of course!) at the event itself...
- Do you know someone (who may know someone etc) who will be able to help us find Ireland's most ideal, its most surreal present around. (Think of taking a penalty at half time in the Aviva Stadium!) The possibilities are endless!
- Are you a celebrity who would like to ehnace their profile and have a great time and experience at the same time?
But it's not all give, give, give:
- We are working with Clodagh and Katie from BLINK PR to promote the event and the lots/companies involved.
- We are developing a catalogue for the event which will showcase each and every lot as a new and different Christmas pressie to buy. Plus there are a whole 3 weeks left of Christmas shopping after the event.
- Genuine word of mouth: the greater the gift, the more people will talk about it.
- Let's not forget you will be helping to change thousands of children's lives in India by helping us build a number of schoolsto keep them off the streets.

4/12/10 Weather forces a rescheduling of the Xmas Art Auction!
In the hope of raising crucial funds to continue the building of a brand new primary School in Cambodia, the Save Children Out Of Poverty, better known as the SCOOP, Foundation are hosting an evening of art, wine, bidding and winning. This is a great chance to get an amazing and personal Xmas pressie for someone, as well supporting the arts and a school in the developing world. (Each sold piece will come with a certificate annou...ncing you have supported the project.)
On Thursday the 16th of December 2010 at 8.00pm, auctioneer extraordinaire George Gerard Mealy will take to the stand to auction off over 90 pieces in the hope of raising vtial funds in order to build a brand new, three floored, concrete built school in Cambodia that will not only create a place to educate up to 250 local Cambodian children, it will also become the centre for a community in an impoverished area outside Phnom Pehn.
More importantly still, it will create a very tangible and 'user friendly' link between the Irish and the Cambodians as we try to encourage as many different people from as many different walks of life to volunteer abroad, in the hope that it will create new avenues for the children over there. We encourage teachers and skilled workers as well as creative people to head over and to teach the kids their respective skill. At times it may not lead to a job in the future, but it would be a source of great fun, and this too in our eyes is a success.
So come on down and help the SCOOP follow its own dream of building this school.
Featured artists include John Nolan, Mark Baker, Shane Sutton, Morgan, Jenny Watkins, Alain Tang, Christopher Sweeney, Louise O'Neill, Oksana Popova, Marja Van Kampen, Kelly Hood, Paul Freeney, Helen McNulty, Anthony Chapman, Bennie Reilly, Niki Purcell, Lucía García Cullinane, Olivier Longuet, Iwona Stefanczuk Blasi, Sharon Moran, Ramon Kassam, Attracta Manson, Sarah Rossney, Mark Ahessy, Peter Sweetman, Laurent Antunes, Robert Moss and Philip Kennedy.
10/10/10 Artist Jenny Watkins to have auction of her new art works to fund trip to Cambodia to teach art at the SCAO.
An Unintentional Beauty Borne Out Of Interruption
Opening Reception: Wednesday 20th Oct, 6pm – 8pm
Daily Viewing: Thurs 21st Oct – Saturday 23rd Oct, 12pm - 8pm
Auction: Sunday 24th Oct 4pm - 7pm
'An Unintentional Beauty Borne Out Of Interruption' is the first solo exhibition by Jenny Watkins featuring large-scale paintings that explore the artist's affiliation with burnt out vans and cars dumped on top of Mt. Leinster. Jenny was inspired by Eckhart Tolle’s theory in A New Earth that we, as human beings, can contemplate the beauty in almost anything once we are aware of our own inner essence. Manifest throughout this series of work is the relationship between the subject and the environment, and the journey therein.
Jenny has teamed up with the SCOOP to exhibit and sell her work in the hope of raising money to fund Jenny to volunteer and teach art at the SCAO, Cambodia. All pieces will go under the hammer of George Mealy in an exciting auction that will be held on Sunday 24th Oct. Bids will be accepted all week and pieces can even be sold before the auction at reserve prices.
Also available at the auction are Jenny's ceramics from both her collections entitled 'The Complexities of Identity and the Distortion of Self,' and 'The Pursuit of Wholeness'. You can view all of Jenny's works on her website at www.jennywatkins.net
28/09/10 The SCOOP Art Gallery @ The Ormond Wine Bar- A new and different gallery space!
Following the success of this year's Art Auction, the guys at the Ormond Wine Bar have offered the SCOOP full time use of their beautiful gallery space to raise funds for our projects.
So starting in October we are going to feature between 5 and 10 artists selling their respective work. 30% of sales are going to go towards the school's we support. We are extremely delighted about this, as it not only is a new and innovative source of income for us and our projects, but it also allows to replay the favour to the numerous artists that have donated pieces outright for our 3 Art Auctions. So keep an eye on our events page to see which artists are featured and whether you think you may want to purchace some wonderful art whilst making a donation to the SCOOP!
24/09/10 Nadine and Jenny planning their trips to India and Cambodia respectively.
We are extremely excited about two volunteers that are going to be heading off over the coming months to the school in India and the school in Cambodia.
Occupational Therapist Nadine Langhard is going to spend a few months working with Kati, the head teacher at the School of Life and work with kids in the area that have some learning or interactional difficulties.
Artist Jenny Watkins is having a show/sale, 'An Unintentional Beauty Borne Out Of Interruption’, to raise funds for her trip to Cambodia. Once over there she's going to teach the kids how to draw and paint.
We are very proud and happy about both these volunteering trips!
20/9/10 Art Auction success!!
Last night we were celebrating raising €20,000 from this year's Art Auction. The money raised from the auction is going straight towards building the primary school in Cambodia. A thousand thank yous go out towards each artist, buyer, sponsor and everyone else who helped us out along the way. Such a success cannot happen without the participation of such people and with everyone pulling in the same direction, all with the same desire to see the school built!
1/07/10 The SCOOP get their CHY Number.
As of the 1st of July, the SCOOP Foundation is a registered charity in Ireland, CHY number 18767.
This allows us to keep vital funds heading towards our projects, and allows us, in two years time from the granted date, to avail of the Scheme of Tax Relief for Donations, where donors, albeit individual or corporate, can claim back up to 21% on their donations. You can find all the gritty details here.
